Developmental assets

Why is it that some kids grow up with ease, while others struggle? Why do some get involved in negative activities, while others spend their time contributing to society?

The Search Institute has identified 40 building blocks -- developmental assets -- that have a tremendous influence on young people’s lives and choices. Research shows that the 40 Developmental Assets help young people make wise decisions, choose positive paths, and grow up being caring and responsible.

The 40 are divided into external and internal assets, and cover such topics as support, empowerment, boundaries and expectations, constructive use of time, commitment to learning, positive values, social competencies and positive identity.
